I have googled this and didn't find any solutions. I have a RAID 1 setup
with the onboard VIA controller and have random files disappearing. It
happens very infrequenly but is very obvious when it does. For example, I
can transfer some files from my main hard drive to my mirrored set and half
of the files inside can be missing after the transfer. I haven't flashed my
bios yet, but was interested if anyone else out there have experienced this.

Thanks in advance

Just some ideas:

What happens if you break the RAID?
If it still happens, then if you swap back to only the other disc, does it
still happen with the other disc?
Yes ==> I would suspect a stuffed controller. If its IDE check the
cables.
No?
I would suspect the drive or cable.

Do you have adequate power on the system?

I have the same setup (p4p800d + via) but I am running raid 0 on
mine...
I am very imppressed with this setup, it smokes and I have not one
issue with it...yet...

are your drives new ? matching ?

I'm using 2 identical maxtors fd7200 ata 133's...

my ide boot drive is also the same as the raid drives...(3 total)

this raid smokes the primary channel on every level and no issues in
winxp with the via drv's either...
