Data Files Instead of Registry For Application Data

I understand that MS are encouraging developers using the NET platform to
move away from storing application related data in the registry and to store
it in data files instead.

Is there a "best practice" in regard to the type of data files to be used -
is there, for example, a move back towards the former 'ini' file types?

I realise this is a fairly general question and would appreciate links to
anywhere that this is/has been discussed.

Hi Martin,
I understand that MS are encouraging developers using the NET platform to
move away from storing application related data in the registry and to store

While they did make the use of the registry using vb.net so simple, I do not
believe that.

But some data can better be hold in a config.file, one of the reasons, it is
much easier to transport than your application to another computer.

And therefore in my opinion is the best to do things as run settings (last
screen size, last screen posistion) the registry and things that should be
transportable in a config.xml file.

Just my 2 Eurocents about this.
