I have WIN XP PRO and a Dell laptop. Everything has been running fine for about 5 months now. Yesterday, I went to eject an audio cd (after one had loaded and played) and insert a new disc only to find that the drive did not recognize an inserted disc. I tried several other discs only to get the same result. I did find that it would still recognize data CD's without any problems. Only after rebooting the machine would an audio CD be recognized but as soon as you eject that disc any other audio CD cannot be accessed and does not show as being in the drive. I have tried to re-install the drivers, etc. and cannot resolve. Please help!

Do not reinstall or other such things. This problem was recognized by MS and
was supposed to have been corrected with the installation of SP1 (Service Pack).
If you do not have SP1 installed, that is about the only way to correct the problem
by rebooting to have it recognize the newly inserted disk. You can also download
SP1 or have MS send you a disk to install it. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to download on a 56k modem with a good connection.

Thanks for the reply, Byte. Your solution sounds encouraging with the exception that I already downloaded and installed the SP1 patch some time ago and do this with all patches when they become available. Is it possible to go back, download it again and reinstall, thereby replacing the existing information? It almost sounds like the SP1 patch has become corrupted somehow. Please let me know on this when you can.

Thanks. - ED

I do not recommend reinstalling SP1. I believe there is also a SP1a and SP2 is
coming out this Fall (?). You can rightclick the drive under My Computer and
click Eject. Remove the CD and close it empty. Rightclick it again and insert a
CD, sometimes it works that way with data and music CDs. Maybe someone has a better answer. Good luck.

WOW! Thank you so much for this workaround. It now works like a charm. Inconvenient at times, yes, but it works and allows me to use iTunes again. Hopefully, Microsoft fixes this problem with the next SP edition. Thanks again.
