DAT Movie Files won't play in PowerPoint XP?

My new PowerPoint XP will play MPEG and AVI files as
inserted "movies" but my DAT video files won't play. Is
there a patch or something I can download to make my XP
work as well as my PowerPoint 2000 did? Thanks,

Where are you getting these DAT files from?
DAT is not a video file format, rather video data given an alternative
extension.
I'm guessing the files come from VCDs?
If so try renaming the extension .mpg (VCDs are created from MPEG1 files)
and then insert as an MPEG.
