Is there such thing as DAT handling freeware? I have a brand new DDS-5
drive which doesn't work with my old soft (Retrospect Backup, no new
drivers for a while), and I am trying not to give away more money that
easilly.

No, i think there is no freeware avalaible. I did a search for that,
because i have HP DDS-2 1533A.
You can ever use ms backup which is on your windows install CD as
add-on, and it will work. Cygwin will recognise your drive if you have
windows 2000/XP, IIR. So u could use tar/cpio cygwin port...
Novabackup is not free, but...some version maybe interesting

Is this any help to you?

I think this software is great for those who need more space generally, and
that it is great as a DAT driver. But it still lacks the backup software
(catalog, file and folder selection by diverse criteria, archive bit,...),
or at least I didn't find it among features reading docs via links you
sent.

Thank you for the link.

I did try NovaBackup, but it also didn't support my tape (at least the demo
didn't).

As far as I know only Windows built in backup (but it's not quite built
with features) and Networker on Linux (but I need it on Windows) can write
on this stupid device of mine.
