Last nights BBC real story higlighted how data can be taken from hard drives when you get rid of them and used for ID fraud against you. And that reformatting does not get rid of the data.

Big heavy hammer

Open up the hard drive & hit it with a large heavy hammer.
Or turn it over and hit the underside circuit board, again with a large heavy hammer.
The more bits that break off the better.

For the purpose of damaging a hard drive a lump hammer will do fine.
However for those who like to make sure, normally just opening up one to the air also works
