How do you shut this thing off.

I have recently upgraded from Win 2K to XP and have registered the bona fide
copy of the new O/S. Current updates have been applied but I keep getting the
"DANGER" alert. I have checked the PC and nothing seems to be out of order.

Can anyone advise a solution to this annoying problem?

What danger alert? Exact message? What type of window does it appear in
(check the title bar)? More details about the message you're seeing would
be helpful.

Maybe ;)

Without more info though, we don't know if the message is coming from
Windows or from an outside party (as I suspect) . If an outside party (via
a popup or a messenger window) it should be ignored and avoided; a full
scan for spyware would be appropriate and advisable.

And if messenger (not the messaging program but the service) than they need
to get a firewall activated on that system or it will soon have other
problems.

I agree with you, specially if He/She install the SP2 and it didn't
recognize the Anti-Virus or if the system doesn't have protection Software
installed.
To the OP:
Please provide more info about your issue, the exact wording, what
Anti-Virus you have installed, Anti-Malware, firewall for us to help you.
You may getting illegitimate warning messages and by clicking on it you are
infecting your machine.
HTH.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Sharon F,

Itis not a visual message it is repetitive audio warning message that souds
exactly like the Robot from lost in Space, except there is no Will Robinson
here!

I have firwall installed and is operational. Any advise would be appreciated.

Audio message that sounds like a robot?
(love the Will Robinson reference <smile>)

This sounds like a feature offered by the motherboard. BIOS can be
configured to deliver warnings about several different hardware related
things: high cpu temp, fans not spinning fast enough, hard drive problems,
etc. These warnings can be delivered visually or as audio or both.

With this extra information, you are most likely "hearing voices" due to a
similar feature on your system. They're usually a little more explicit than
simply saying "warning" though.

Since you have software managing this, you might look to see if anything is
being reported to Event Viewer (it's possible the software is handling info
in a way that Event Viewer can pick it up) -or- look for program in your
start menu related to the system/motherboard. If found, it's possible there
may be a corresponding log file with information about the warning.

Another approach:

Are you comfortable looking around in BIOS? If yes, you could do one or
more of the following:
- check to see what hardware events are configured to deliver a warning and
perhaps figure out from there what is amiss
- disable the voice warning to get a text warning or system beep that may
be more informative.

System beeps are not informative by themselves but will be if you match up
the beep pattern with a table of "beep codes" for your motherboard. The
table will list a problem for each beep code pattern. If this table is not
included in your system documentation, you can usually find it online by
searching for "beep code" and the name/version of your BIOS.

For what it's worth I have the audio feature on mine but it's disabled.
Reason: I have an Antec True Power case that regulates one of the fan
speeds according to CPU usage. Unforturnately, the motherboard doesn't
always agree with the speeds the case chooses and was delivering false
warnings. I could have disabled the fan monitoring entirely but instead
opted to disable voice notification and changed the threshold level for the
CPU fan.
