Hi All,

I recently reinstalled XP on two of my machines. Now, I cannot map
drives anymore.

I have my own account, which is not password protected. When I look
into the user accounts, it says I am the Administrator.

When I try and map drives, I enter my user name but do not give it any
password. As soon as I hit enter, it changed the box to say 'Guest'
and wants a password.......

I get the same behavior if I password protect the account.......

I need to map these drives, so, if someone can help me with this
mishap, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Are the drives and/or folders to map on your local machine? If so, are they
shared out?
Do you have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed ?

If the drives (or folders) are on a different computer on your LAN are they
shared out?
Are the two computers using the same protocols? Such as TCP/IP or NetBIOS ?

Everything should be in order. The only thing I did was to install
service pack 2........they are on the same LAN, same subnet..........

Do I need to 'share' each drive individually???

I believe you must select each device or particular files you want to share.
If you 'right click' on a device or file you will see a 'sharing and
security' option.

Service Pack 2 automatically enables the Windows Firewall. If you are
not running a third-party firewall, go to the Windows Firewall applet
in Control Panel and enable File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions
tab. If you are using a third-party firewall (and have properly
configured it to allow your lan traffic as Trusted), then turn the
Windows Firewall off. You don't want two firewalls running, and a
third-party program will be better than the WF. All firewalls must be
properly configured to allow lan traffic as Trusted.

If that doesn't help, go through this network troubleshooter by MVP

It will usually pinpoint the source of the problem.
