dont think youre fast or sophisticated enough to track spyware adware and
malware hopping around in the registry while tangling with task mgr and ctrl
alt delete in other words its not the recommended method for dealing with
that so try getting ahold of free software that's also safe and capable of
keeping your PC relatively clean of spyware adware and malware unless you
spend too much time at sites that exist for the purpose of installing this
stealth junk (aka S**T) on everyones machine so go to each of the links
below and download then install them ALL

1. MSN Toolbar - Prevents rogue popups inside IE.
Popups don't just "pop up". They also hide activity like installation of
malicious software, Spyware, Adware etc. This toolbar prevents popups from
happening (some gaming sites don't like this but you can adjust
accordingly). Automatic running and updating, with a few prompts, but not
much more.

2. Microsoft Windows Anti-Spyware (beta) - Must Have
This is similar to the resident blocker Spybot S&D has, and compliments it
well. Auto-updating is settable, as is auto-scanning (recommended to do at
3am when everyone's supposed to be in bed).

3. Ad-Aware Personal Edition - Must Have
One of the first of its kind, still one of the best, and like the others
here, free. Manual launching, and manual updating, so you have to develop a
habit of running this once in a while just to stay clean.

4. Spybot Search & Destroy - Must Have
This is an absolute must, just like the rest on this list. Spybod S&D has a
blocking feature similar to the Microsoft Anti-Spyware product, but I find a
combination of all of these tools are necessary to really cover your bases
and prevent bad installations of worse software. You can set this up to
block with a resident tool (recommended), as well as check for updates when
you run it - but one must still develop the habit of running this every week
(if not a little less) to clean and/or fix.

5. SpywareBlaster - Must Have
Another blocker, this one primarily works on web installations that want to
put stuff on your machine and get information from it. Automatic, doesn't
have to be run to work as it's resident. Updating is manual. Works with
Spybot S&D as well.

6. Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (most likely via Windows
update, but...)
In the off chance you've got something bad onboard and can't find it with
your virus scanner, or Norton (a product I've stopped recommending
altogether as it fouls up your system something fierce when you uninstal
it - bad sports, Symantec!). As far as Virus protection I use Trend's via
Fix-It 5.

Good luck!

There is a very good removal program for popuper at:

http://forum.hijackthis.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=108

The above link is for the zip file download. It comes
from this page:

http://forum.hijackthis.de/showthread.php?t=3127

It will leave the following four entries in a HijackThis
log:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
http://www.qfind.net/search.php?qq=%s
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper -
{7442EF58-B14E-4338-8417-3EADDCF0DF25} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper -
{7442EF58-B14E-4338-8417-3EADDCF0DF25} - (no file) (HKCU)

Check them and then Fix Checked and the system should be
clean at least of popuper and friends.

Get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select
Scan to check and fix the above.

If you got your popuper from the 2nd generation of
smitfraud you may need to do the following to restore your
desktop:

Start, Run, regedit, OK to bring up the regedit program.

find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows-
CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each
Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)

Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you
find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK.
Close the program and reboot.

Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should
bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the
wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need
to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My
Active Desktop as a web page. OK
