I have a usb dsl modem hooked to a router that services 4
PCs. NO PROBLEM. One PC replaced by laptop that wants to
access DSL via wifi. I get NetGear wireless router,
thinking I can just plug into original router and use wifi.
So, I connect NetGear into old connection of the now
laptop, but it can't access DSL. Laptop says NetGear
(name of wifi router) available, but I can't get it to
access the router. Plus the "link" light on the wifi card
in the laptop isn't on. Laptop wifi works at StarBucks.
I can plug into one of the 4 ethernet connections on the
NetGear and it works (laptop or other PC), but the laptop
can't communicate via wifi. What do I need to do? Put
hard coded IP address in laptop's network setup? How? I'm
way over my head here.

That's a configuration issue between the Netgear and laptop. Can't
tell what it is exactly, you don't provide any information to make a
determination.

My car drive fine on roads, but poorly on lakes. :)

This is all in the Netgear configuration, you'll need to walk through
the Netgear docs and help to get a connection on the laptop. Then it
becomes a network issue to use a Netgear wireless router on your
current router.
