I recently upgraded my PC by installing a state of the
art Gigabyte 7NNXP motherboard (duel bios, Raid -
switched off, etc) and AMD 3200+ processor. I reinstalled
all the old software, including XP and Norton's System
Works, after reformatting the HD and now I find the HD
needs defragging daily (even hourly) - any ideas?
NSW indicates that within a few hours I am down to 80%
fragmented. In fact, after synchronising my PDA last
night (HP4550 PC2002) the C drive was reported to be 77%
while previously it was 98%.
I have used both NSW and MS Optimisation but the results
don't last.
I am not a gamer, but my son surfs the net for hours (e-
bay and other general sites).
The HD is 80 GB with 55 GB free. I have 512mb of 400 Hz
RAM.
I have I think turned as much of the unused functions off
in the BIOS as I can.
I have downloaded a trial of Disk Keeper but this does
not seem to be cure the problem, just something that
suppresses the main symptoms. Is ultra frequent
defragging a penalty for viewing pages on the web?
(Something I have not seen reported elsewhere before!)
My concern lies with Go Back (and System Restore if I was
running this instead). Every time I defrag I lose all the
safe restore points. That means if a load something that
just isn't right for me or my system, I can't simply Go
Back after my now daily defrag.
I have tried scan disk and a few other system based tools
but none seem to suggest that there is a problem. That
said, NSW regularly reports the following when doing a
system check after start-up:
The NSW Windows Registry Scan reports that -
The key "bmpfile\shell\open command", refers to an
invalid command entry, "C:\program files\logitech\Desktop
Messenger\8876480\6.1.436-8876480L\program\ prvcat.exe."%
1".". (Temporarily cured by NWS but comes back at start
up).
"MAPISRVR.exe can not access a necessary file
gapi32.dll". (Not cured by NWS).
The NSW Program Integrity Scan reports that -
The key "software\microsoft\windows\current
version\sharedDLL" refers to a missing file, "C:\Program
files\common files\Roxio Shared\DLL shared". (Not cured
by NWS).
