While I may have excused myself from this part of the beta (see my respone to
Subject: Daily definitions update... Yesterday in Annoncements ), it is still
important for me and others to understand the process.

I will assume the question of "How will it work if I miss a day or 2?" has
been thought out. Yes???

If I update on Monday and am off line Tuesday and Wednesdy and go back
online Thurday evening what will happen?

Will I get Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as a one "merged" delta (825KB
or less!)
Great Idea!

Will I get Tue, Wed, and Thur as seperate deltas is one download,
Delta1-275KB, Delta-275KB, Delta3-275KB, one install. (One SRP)
Good Idea!

Will I have to go through the process 3 times, with 3 installs. (and 3 SRPs)
Really Stupid Idea!

or

Will I have to download a full Install package that contains, Program,
Engine, UI, and full latest definitions. (2.80MB)
Bad Idea!

In the very limited testing that I've done so far, deltas are cumulative.

OK--say that you've downloaded a new copy of 1347 from the download
center--you have UI version 1347, an engine version whose number I'm not
sure of (but it isn't current) and definitions 1.0.0 (i.e. none.)

To get current, you need the most recent Full and Engine update--see Engel's
messages in .announcements and .signatures, and the most recent Delta.

AutoUpdate or WindowsUpdate will take care of this automatically, and with
the minimum number of bytes transferred, I believe--nothing you need to
worry about.

I don't know what pattern to expect from these updates, but Deltas should
get progressively larger, I'd expect, and I'd also expect an occasional or
periodic Full or Full with Engine.

Again--none of these details is anything the average user needs to know
about--AU or WU or MU will take care of this--they are really only relevant
to someone attempting to update an offline machine by hand.

Come on Tim, the stated point is to test daily updates and we've known for
weeks they're using a delta process. What does it really matter if we know
they're trying to keep the overhead down, which is obvious due to the
millions of downloads that must occur, and more importantly, it works!

This is why they're testing now, before releasing to many millions more as
completed, and also what you agreed to be involved in when you downloaded a
Beta version of the software. Most will find the prospect of possible daily
updates a positive, as you've already seen, and worth the potential risk
during this testing phase.
