I'm getting daily automatic updates of Windows XP on my
desktop. This is not happening on my laptop. Is anyone
else getting these daily automatic updates? Are they
really necessary?

What is the method by which you are receiving these updates? The globe in
the taskbar or by email?

The emails are fake - viruses and trojans.

Are you allowing the updates that the globe wishes you to install to
install? Have you visited windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check what you
really need?

I've been responding to the globe in the taskbar that the
update is already downloaded and ready for installation.
I haven't been going to the Update site as I figured I
must be getting more that enough updates. Since it
doesn't say what they are for I don't know if I really
need them. I was "bending" to the side of installing them
as they might be needed for security.

Go to :

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Scan for updates, install all the critical ones at the very least.

Two of the latest updates 328310 and KB824141 are
security updates. But in order to exploit these
venerabilities a person needs to have their hands on your
keyboard, they cannot be exploited remotely!!!!!!
does this apply to you? if not why download them (and
take the chance that they screw up your computer?)

Do you even brother to read what these updates are for?
Many do not apply to a computer in someones home, these
are a fix all for everything, many are to secure a network
ie:office with many people around that have access to
your computer. Why install something that you MIGHT not
need and take the chance of screwing your computer up?
for something that doesnt apply to you anyway?
Its not like microsoft has a good track record for these
hotfixes. there are fixes to fix the fixes, they are
putting these things out way too fast and doing very
little testing on them. Just read some other posts and
see how many people are having problems with them.
There I vented and feel better.

Well, if you do this smartly and make a system restoration point before you
install the updates, why NOT install them? Any security risk is bad.. The
fact is that if I have physical access to your computer, it is mine to do
with as I please anyway.

Not only do I read what they are for, I incorporate them into installs
daily, I post on these newsgroups to help those people with problems, etc.
The fact is that if people did things with a little intelligence, they would
not have problems like you describe. Use the Windows XP Restoration Points
to their advantage.. Test to to make sure itis working occassionally. etc.

Although some updates have caused problems on a few hundred people's systems
in the past (maybe even a few thousand or more - but not everyone's) it is
usually because of something unique on the systems or hardware issues or
pevious tweaking gone bad.

Yes - I read the update KB articles, likely in more detail than most people.
I have found NO REASON not to suggest that ALL users go and update
regularly. And if some of the updates are not for the home user.. So?
Likely it will not harm them in any way - but please, tout the "why install
all of the critical ones when they have to be AT the computer to use the
vulnerability" argument and let the holes remain open to allow the hackers
to find the remote exploitation.. by all means.

I have been getting those also for over 3 weeks now. It
(the repetitive update) is " secuirity update for
Microsoft Windows 819696".

I have been getting it daily by itself and on several
occasions with other updates as well.

The update does not prompt you to restart your comp. I
have tried both methods (restarting or not) multiple
times with no success.

I am not sure if this is the same problem you are having
but it sure is irritating to say the least. I just hope
it is a bugged update and not something malicious.

BTW WHERE do i find a link or email addy to send this
problem to MS?? I can't find anything at all.

Thanks
