D-Link DFE 530TX PCI NIC card install probs

Howdy: I've tried pretty near every way imaginable to install the
drives for this darn card. Had to re-install the OS now Windows 98
won't run this NIC card. It should up in device manager and I've
download the drivers from the D-Link web site (serveral times!) and it
goes through the rig-a-ma-roll of installing the drivers and says it
does it successfully, but when I go back to device manager, there's
that pesky yellow exclamation mark! I've been into Safe Mode and
deleted the card, and I've taken the card out of the 'puter and
re-installed it. Nothing seems to work.

I've download two, count 'em, two different sets of install
instructions from their web site and neither one works. I've even
tried installing the drivers first and then the card, which is the way
the product broucher says to do it. This was also downloaded from the
web site, so I guess that's three install proceedures from them.

Can someone help me install this puppy, or should I just chuck it and
go to newegg and buy a new NIC card??

Thanks for any help.

What IRQ is the card on?

I'd be willing to bet it's conflicting with something else and that's why
it can't start.

IRQ 09
Looks like it. Here is the IRQ list from System Information, could you
recommend which IRQ to set this puppy for? 03?

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 (free)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Rev B)
9 Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128D (WDM)
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
11 Rage 128 VR
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Thanks for your help.

reset configuration data in the bios..or clear the bios cmos after you
install the card.
maybe the card is defective....happens often

Thanks for your help.

First, in BIOS set 'Plug and Play OS?' to NO and then tell it to reset
configuration data. That will cause it to reassign IRQs, which may not make
a bit of difference if Windows sets them back but it's worth a shot.

The Sound Blaster also on IRQ9 is a red flag for me as I've never seen
anything that causes more configuration troubles than a Creative Labs
'anything', especially their sound cards.

Anyway, if the configuration reset doesn't work try setting the NIC to
IRQ3, if your motherboard allows putting IRQ3 on the PCI buss, since it
appears you have no second serial port. Second choice IRQ5, although I
wonder if the SB is stealth using it for DOS compatibility mode hence
second choice. Third would be to move the SB to IRQ5 with the NIC on IRQ9.

Have you moved cards around the PCI slots from when it previously worked?

I went to Creative and looked up the manual but, of course, it says not one
word whatsoever about IRQs other than something akin to "if there's a
conflict then fix it." Big help.

Try this first to fix the IRQ's. Enter the BIOS and find the entry
called "reset configuration data". Set this to enable and reboot. After
one boot cycle reenter the BIOS to verify that this entry has defaulted
back to disable. If it hasn't, then reset to disable manually. This
should result in a more conventional allocation. while in the BIOS
before exiting, I suggest that you also disable any onboard hardware
that you don't use. This will free up the resources allocated to that
hardware.

If that didn't work, sometimes you must reset the defaults in the BIOS
& or remove all cards and add one by one rebooting after each to
release certain IRQ's--I have experienced this many times with NIC &
Sound cards/ Video cards & Sound cards/ or NIC & Video cards wanting
the same IRQ.
It took several times when I had a new vid card and sound card on an
eMachine.
