This may sound like a really dumb question but my D Drive seems to have
disappeared and the computer is not recognising or playing any CDs....

Anyone able to offer any help?

There can be different reasons for this including a disconnected cable.
Firstly is the drive recognized by the BIOS? If not a cable may have come
loose.
A dead drive can also cause this. Can you boot off the drive?

Another problem maybe related to software. Check Alex Nichol's page here
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm. Scroll down to the Problems section. There
is a link to download a regfix that might help providing the drive is
functional.

Reboot the PC. Does the power light on the CD drive flash at all? If not,
check the power to it.

If the power light flashes, then very early in the boot sequence you should
see a black screen with white text - does it show anything there about
finding the CD drive? If not, check the CD's cable.

That's a start.

My first port of call would be to go into the Device Manager, right click on
it and select Uninstall, then re-boot and it will re-install itself. that
might sort the problems out.
You can get to the Device Manager either via the Control Pnl/
System/Hardware or by right clicking on My Computer and select Manage.
Regards Mike.
