My wife (who has no knowledge about cygwin) had xwin.exe running which used a
lot of CPU and bandwith. I assume somebody was monitoring her desktop.
How is this possible?
Can this be done via the yahoo messenger?

Obviously someone was at her desktop and installed it on her computer. It
doesn't get installed remotely - unless she requested a remote assistance
session and it was installed by the person who was helping her.

You've entirely missed the point of the question in the original post.
