My father's son

I have a Stylus Color 777i which won't work. Turning it on just causes the
cartridge tray to move a half inch to the left (incrementally, it doesn't
return anywhere), the wheels at the back to turn for about three seconds
then turn slightly faster for three or four more seconds then the whole
thing stops and the red light goes on

Does anyone know what this means? I have taken the cover off and can't see
any paper jams. There is a misalignment of the front flap which I don't
fully understand as well as a slight misalignment of the rear paper feed
which I dont seem to be able to correct (it results from one side of the
plastic panel which I think sits behind the paper being apparently spring
loaded while the other side is set into some sort of groove so it/both of
these misalignments may well be intentional)

Have you tried lubricating the guide rail that the cartridges travel on?
Sometimes all that is needed is a wipe down the rail with a rag with a
silicone based lubricant. Others can suggest other products.

No, this one is a chucker: No lubrication does anything and no one has any
other ideas

Plus when the cartridge tray gets to the left, - end of its travel, the
servo at the right which seems to move it starts to click a half dozen
times, the belt goes a bit slack and it doenst go any further or reset
itself.

Plus Epson doesnt exactly have technical support which I take to mean that
they want you to buy a new printer when yours exhibits any faults (they
told a friend of mine to pay more for servicing than the printer is worth
when the ink pads filled up rather than replace them or reset the counter;
OR buy a new printer. AND they made her pay for the priviledge of being
told to buy another printer!!! So you know where THEY are coming from)

Plus I hear that the carts for this printer cost more than the printer is
worth which I suppose says even more about where they are coming from

At the cost of printers today it makes more sense to just buy a new one.
The 777 is several years old so it makes sense it could have problems. This
is what all the companies do. Also Epson does have phone and email tech
support.

I know. I was offered a Lexmark 605 new in the box for $10 today

I gracefully declined on the grounds that I got 'burned' once when I was
given a suspiciously similar looking Dell free-giveaway Lexmark a year ago
and found that the cost of the tiny cartridges was more than the printer was
worth so I gave that one away to a cousin who I advised to 'lightly use it'

(PS 'New in the box' doesn't in my opinion imply fresh or usable cartridges)
