customizing XP

whats up everyone, a couple weeks ago i dloaded this software that would customize the XP start up screen and change the start menu and taskbar but it gave me a whole lot of spyware and adware. are there any free programs that allow you to customize XP that are safe for your computer?
 
I reckon the best and safest is Object Dock and the apps associated with it. All freebies are likely to carry some garbage with them though - and most packages that allow you to tweak the look of your desktop will essentially be messing about or replacing your 'shell' files. The more flashy the effects, the more dangerous the conseuqences (crashes etc) and the more loss in performance you will experience.

I know the desire to do fantastic things to your desktop is powerful, but I recommend that you stick with the Windows stuff and keep away from the Dark Side - that way lies sorrow and slow performance (but then again, with a name like themenace, perhaps you are already a Sith??):D
 
I tried out Style XP, it allows you to customized the stlye, logon screen, and loading screen.
after a while it will tell you to register though, and if you dont you can use it anymore which is a bummer.
but i was able to get the Loading screen to stay the same :D
what im looking for is a "moving desktop" like one that has dripping water that moves when you move your mouse around
 
i used to use a programe called windows blinds

it does look very good!
but yes it does eat your cpu
