customizing the (useless) common open dialog

The common open dialog (Win2K) lists "History, My Projects, Desktop,
Favorites, and My Network Places"

This is useless. Why can't I drag-n-drop shortcuts into the far left pane?

Q1. Is there *any* way to modify it at all?

Q2. Why is rename, move up, and move down grayed out?

Oh that. Yes I know. It takes a shell plugin of sorts. Why you cannot is because only namespace folders appear there. An example of namespace folders are what you see in Windows Explorer in Folder view in far bottom left. You also get something similar when using office files. But in that case yes you can customize it.

Well, it turns out you can use TweakUI to change the hard-coded 5 number of
locations.

kUI.asp
i.e. "Open", "Places Bar", "Custom places bar"

ARGH!! It doesn't work with Dev Studio .NET since the b@$tards don't use the
common open dialog. WTF is the point of a common standard if people don't
follow it?!

Well, at least I can create a folder on the desktop, which contains all my
shortcuts. That folder appears in the "Look In" folder drop down list. An
extra click, but at least it works in all applications.
