Hello,

I find the title bar buttons for Minimize, Maximize and Close a bit
difficult to click, because they are so small. To avoid mistakingly
clicking on the wrong one (for example I often hit "maximize" when
I want to click "close"), it would help if the buttons were either
be wider (not higher), or if there would be some space between them.

What possibilities offers Windows to customize these buttons?

Try this.

Right click the Desktop.
Select Properties.
Click the Appearance tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Under Item Desktop should be listed.
Click on one of the Caption buttons on one of the samples.
Either the Inactive Window or Active Window.
Under Item Caption Buttons should now be listed.
Increase the size by clicking on the up arrow (^).
Click OK.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you select a windows and buttons setting other than Windows Classic, it
will override the following settings, except in some older programs.

Note: In order to fully use this feature you must have your Windows and
buttons setting on Windows Classic.

This I know, but it is not what I am looking for: It makes the buttons
larger in the way that it makes them higher AND wider, i.e. by
increasing the height of the title bar. To make them so large that
I would have no problems clicking them, I would need to make
the title bar about 3 times as big (=high) as it is by default, which
is a bit unhandy if there are many windows on the screen.

Instead I'm looking for a way to make either the buttons *wider*
(but not higher, i.e. getting rectangular shape instead of square
shape), OR alternatively extend the distance between the buttons.
