Customizing folders with a picture

The problem I am having relates the the ability to right
click on a folder, select properties, then customize, and
selecting a picture for the folder. I went and did this
for about 30 folders I use for work. I found some of the
pictures I used appeared on other folders throughout my
computer with no pattern. I can't figure this out.
Additionally, sometimes the pictures just disapear from
the folder and I need to redo the customize funtion again.
