Does anyone know the location of the registry setting that controls the
default shutdown option, i.e. my laptop always displays "hibernate" when
most of the time I actually shut it down , so I'd like to change that. I
used to know where this setting was but they've moved it, or possibly
disabled it (noooooo!)

Control Panel --> Power options --> Advanced --> Power Buttons

(You need to be logged in on an account with admin privileges.)

Sorry that doesn't do it, perhaps I should clarify

when I hit startMenu > shutdown I want to be able to change the default
option in the drop down box, changing the power button options has no effect

I know of no way to do that directly.

Why not create a shortcut in the Start Menu whose target is an
"shutdown" command with appropriate options? (See Help and Support
for the options.)

My Thinkpad always opens that shutdown dialog with the last previously
selected option enabled by default.
Using Windows Classic desktop.

Martin.
