Can the navigation bar buttons be customized to handle shortcuts
directly?

It seems shortcuts must be handled through the 'Shortcuts'-button on
the navigation bar. The shortcuts are organized in a tree-structure,
unlike the old outlook bar.

The flat-structure of the old outlook bar just seemed better. Hence my
question to cutomize the navigation bar buttons.

If Microsoft decided that the tree-structure view is the 'new way' of
handling shortcuts, why wasn't the navigation bar buttons dropped in
Outlook 2003 ?? The buttons are just predefined static shortcuts!

No, you can't change those buttons. Note that the buttons aren't "just"
shortcuts but they change the functionality of the top part of the
Navigation Pane.

What is it that you don't like about the new way of navigation? Note that
you can also create Favorite Folders when you are in the Mail Navigation.

Roady, I see the functionality. For instance if I press the button
'Contacts' the navigationbar offers different views of my contact
list. And yes, I like these handy functionalities.

Why then, do the functionality not appear when I make a shortcut to
the same Contact list? And worse, if I make shortscuts to public
contact lists they don't appear either!

Apprently Microsoft concepted the navigation bar totally wrong. The
buttons are still static shortcuts I my opinion. All contact lists
should present some standard functionality not just 'My Contacts'
(when navigated to from the button).

In the Favorite Folders in Mail Navigation you can only create
shortcuts to other Mail Navigation objects. Which practically makes
the Favorite Folder in Mail Navigation useless because theres only
very few Mail objects.

The navigation bar just seems useless. The tree-view is old fashioned
and inefficent. Why fully cutomizable shortcut bar in older outlook
was simple and easy to use. I had it customed to all the things I
needed using just one mouseclick.
