Paul,

See this.

Unable to resize or move the Web content in the Desktop
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/movewebitem.htm

If your Excel document was saved as an .htm file you can also use it as
Desktop background.

Open Display Properties, click Browse on the Desktop tab to
search for that .htm file.

If you choose an .htm document as your background picture, the Position
options are unavailable. The .htm document is automatically stretched to
fill your background.

Here's an idea that I just thought of.

Open that file in Excel in full screen, then hit your Print Scrn key. Print
Scrn key copies everything on your screen.

Open Paint, Start | Run | Type: mspaint | Click OK.

Hit Ctrl + V to paste the copied screen into Paint. Then click Edit and
Select All.

Move the picture around to edit the size.

Move it to the left and move it up.

Then use the resize tabs on the bottom and the right to resize the white
space and whatever else you want to remove.

I know of no instructions on how to do this exactly, you have to mess around
and learn how to do it.

Tip: Use Save As and rename the original file to OriginalName2 or something
and edit the 2 file, that way if you mess up you still have the original to
Save As again

Save the file as a .bmp or a .jpg, it doesn't matter which. If saved as a
jpg, Windows will just change it to a .bmp file after the following.

You can right-click the file and then click Set as Desktop Background.

Or you can open Display Properties, click Browse on the Desktop tab to
search for that file.

There are probably other ways that I haven't thought of.

Paul,

I may have overlooked the obvious here.

Change the background color.

Display Properties | Desktop tab | Color

Color
[[Click to select a color to use on your desktop, or customize a new color.
If you did not select a background, the color will cover your entire
desktop. If you selected a background and chose Center in the Position list
box, the color fills the space around the background.]]
