"customize" in properties

On one of my partitions (system partition C) I am missing the menu
"Customize"in the properties menu. On all other partitions it's there.
Unfortunately Vista Windows Explorer thinks that particular partition (C) s
full of images or songs, as I have the context menu of Windows Media Player.
It is rating my system files with stars etc. :-)
Maybe I overlooked something, but how to change this?
Any help appreciated.

Hi,

I believe that is by design. The volume designated as system cannot be
changed in that manner. As to what you are seeing, is there by chance an
autorun.inf file on the root of the drive?

In XP you didn't get a customize properties tab at all for any
partitions/drives, and this was very irritating when it decided to put it in
Music mode. So at least we can change other drives other than the OS
partition. The crap thing is that Vista still decides to put my C: drive in
Music mode even when it should know very well what the hell is on on it!

I don't think this is by design, as I do not have the problem on my laptop.
And no, sorry, there is no "autorun.inf" in the root. Any other
suggestiuons maybe?

Close all instances of Windows Explorer. Open Regedit.exe and delete the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags (note that you'll lose ALL
folder customization stored on your computer).

After that, open your C drive and classic "Details" view should be back
again.

Dear Martin
Many thanks for reply, highly appreciated...........however, unfortunately
that key is not in my registry..........Any other idea?

Dear Daniel
Reloaded my backup and yes, I could remove that registrykey and yes, I now
have the details available. Many thanks!!

You're welcome, Lampie.

Hi Lampie,

What Rick meant is that the "Customize" tab is not available in the drive
properties (and in the special folders' property sheet). Yes, it's by
design.

If the Task pane shows inappropriate items for the drive, then it's a
problem with the FolderType registry value. When you open a folder or drive
for the first time, the shell sniffs the folder contents automatically and
assigns an appropriate template (FolderType) for the folder.

If incorrect template is assigned for a drive/special folder, you may try
clearing the "Bags" registry key, and have the system rebuild it
automatically.

Another option is to locate the appropriate Bag # for the drive/special
folder and reset the "FolderType" value manually. To do so, follow Keith
Miller's article here:

Common Tasks Don't Match Folder Type
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_common_tasks.htm

That was originally written for Windows XP systems, but the steps can be
adapted for Windows Vista. Note that the "Bags" registry key location varies
in Vista.
