on some folders in XP if you right click on the folder
and click properties there is a 'customize' tab which
allows you to change the default display and other
features. On some folders this tab is not available.
Why is this? there are some folders I want to customize
but the tab is not available.

thanks

Folder customisation is stored in a file in the folder called desktop.ini. It's a all user setting so normally doesn't apply to network drives (one person customisating a folder that 10 000 people will use) and CD can't store the settings cause the desktop.ini can't be written.

For folders where there is no tab, moving the desktop.ini into the folder from a customised one will transfer the settings. The folder needs to be Read Only but on folders where the dialog doesn't appear some don't require read only to be set or it has system set (which has the same effect of read only).

Yes David i noticed this when i burned an already 'customized' folder onto a
CD. The resulting CD also showed the custom folder icon and the other
customisations. I noticed after burning the folder that the desktop.ini had
been copied over to the CD, and hence the customizations.
