Using XP SP2 and unable to find any info on how to customize column width on
folder contents. For example, want to widen the column named "Name" to
automatically display full file names. Any help would be appreciated.

If you're talking about Windows Explorer, move the mouse over the bar '|' at
the end of the Name column.
The mouse cursor should change, hold the left mouse button down and drag
left/right to resize column.

This hold true for all of Windows applications and column headers.

You can also use CTRL+NUMPAD's '+' which will auto-size columns

These work for most Windows programs.

Click and Drag a header divider to change the width of a column.

Double click the header divider to open a column to the width needed to view
the longest entry. You have to drag it back to get it to be narrow again.
If the column is wider than the longest entry, double click the header
divider to resize it to the width of the longest entry.

Ctrl + + (Hold the Ctrl key down and press the plus key on the numeric
keypad), this will adjust all the column widths to the longest entry in each
column. You have to drag them back to get them narrow again.

1. On the View menu, click Choose Details and then click the name of the
column that you want to adjust.
2. In the Width of selected column (in pixels) box, enter the size that you
want and then click OK.

Right click one of the headers to get a choice to add or remove headers.

Right click one of the headers, down at the bottom, click More... to get
Choose Details if you want to change the order.

This also works in any folder in lieu of using View | Choose Details.

Column Headers can also be left clicked and dragged to change the order.

Thanks, I really like the Ctrl + short cut, but I am looking for a way to
widen ALL "name" columns for ALL my folders at one time instead of one by
one. (I have many folders.) I thought going in to "choose details" and
selecting the pixels would do this, but it seems to only change the one I
have open at the time. Any suggestions?

But is there a way to apply these settings for example to only all
SUBFOLDERS of a folder and not ALL folders ?
For example, I want all music folders to display artist name, album etc,
photos other columns.
For now I have to set it for each folder, and they are many, many so
impossible to achieve
Is there a way to apply these settings to sublfoders only ? Be it per
scripting ?
TIA

I've written a script that will apply all the view customizations you can set to all of a folder's
subfolders. Right-click the link below & save to your computer. The zip file contains a readme
file & the script itself.

http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip

You can select a folder & configure its view settings, then those are set to be inherited by all
subfolders (you have the option of saving or wiping out current saved views) . You can set a
default for My Pics, another for My Music, and then a more generic default for My Computer. The
inheritance settings are separate from the folder view itself -- for example, you can set a
non-grouped view to be the default inheritance for My Computer, then return My Computer to its
standard 'group by type' layout after running the script without affecting the default view you have
set.

While I know of no way to tell Explorer to auto-adjust the column width to the longest name in the
folder, my script will allow you to set it to any width you choose. So you could set it to a width
that allows 90% or so of the names to be seen, and deal with the rest manually.

:

These work for most Windows programs.

Click and Drag a header divider to change the width of a column.

Double click the header divider to open a column to the width needed to
view the longest entry. You have to drag it back to get it to be narrow
again. If the column is wider than the longest entry, double click the
header divider to resize it to the width of the longest entry.

Ctrl + + (Hold the Ctrl key down and press the plus key on the numeric
keypad), this will adjust all the column widths to the longest entry in
each column. You have to drag them back to get them narrow again.

1. On the View menu, click Choose Details and then click the name of the
column that you want to adjust.
2. In the Width of selected column (in pixels) box, enter the size that
you want and then click OK.

Using XP SP2 and unable to find any info on how to customize column
width on folder contents. For example, want to widen the column named
"Name" to automatically display full file names. Any help would be
appreciated.
