The background picture of the Welcome Screen (where multiple users log on) in Windows XP has been changed by a visitor and I wish to change this back to the original default however am unable to locate the means of doing so.

Click start/control panel/appearance and themes then choose a desktop
background and go from there

Are you referring to the actual Welcome Screen, or the desktop wallpaper that may briefly appear before the Welcome Screen does?

Ok, then this may get a little tricky. Do you have Service Pack 1 installed? If so, did you install it from Windows Update or manually? Or did it come with your computer? You can tell if SP1 is on your machine by going to Control Panel, System, General tab.

Doug,
SP1 is installed and when I checked the original installation disks for the HP computer it appears to be the Windows XP PRO SP1 disk. So I do hold a disk copy.

Ok, then not so tricky (unless they really went about it the hard way). Put the CD in the drive, and then open a Command Prompt, Window. Enter

EXPAND -R X:\I386\LOGONUI.EX_ C:\Windows\System32
EXPAND -R X:\I386\LOGONUI.EX_ C:\Windows

You can verify that Logonui.exe is still the logon interface by going to Start, Run and entering REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look in the right pane for the UIHost value. It should read "logonui.exe", with no path and no quotes.

Well some difficulty! The logon interface appears to be correct as per regedit process however when I enter what you have listed at the command prompt I receive a message it cannot open input file x: \1386\logonui.ex_

My apologies, I should have added one more step. Change the X in

EXPAND -R X:\I386\LOGONUI.EX_

to the actual letter of your CD-ROM drive. And if your XP installation is not in C:\Windows, then adjust the second part of the command accordingly.
