I was called to look at a customers browser as it was
running slow. When I got there I started the browser and
Waited, and Waited, and Waited. It finally opened, but it
took about 45 - 50 secs. I opened the task manager to
monitor the cpu load, and guess what there was none. I
watched the task manager when I changed web sites, I saw
the browser go into "non responding" mode, then after the
50 secs it said running.

The customers office inists on running Gator (yes I
said "insists" on gator for password saving") So when I
run adaware of course I see TONS of spyware (mostly all
pertaining to Gator).

His system is a pIII with 256 mb 12gig (of available HD
space) running 2000, with ALL service packs.

Any ideas what this can be? I am contemplaiting repairing/
reinstalling IE 6.0.

P.s. I got the same results logged into their domain, as
well as in local admin mode!

THanks all

Try scanning for viruses, and defragging. Defragging will
probably help some, because if someone is computer
illiterate enough to use Gator, they probably have never
defragged. Running AdAware and getting rid of the spyware
will usually not affect the program, so it MIGHT be safe
to quarintine all of the spyware on the system. Try
convincing the person to stop using IE and use Mozilla,
since it blocks pop-ups and alos stores passwords. if
they have eWallet, DateManager, WeatherScope, or
PrecisionTime, or GAIM, try to convince them that they
are not needed, and could literally take any information
that you have entered into the computer, since they are
things from Gator. Also, clean out all caches, delete
cookies, and tweaking a few settings such as disk cache
could help. (FYI: Gator is now Claria.)For more info on
Gator: http://www.pcpitstop.com/gator/default.asp

This will be of no help to you and for that I am sorry,
but, this persons office needs to hit in the head with a
stick and scolded like a puppy that goes on the carpet.....
NO!!! If you are your own company, I advise not doing
business with them, even better, charge them full price for
3 weeks diagnostic, then hit them with the stick...Gator is
the problem, I am sure there may be underlying issues, but
Gator....Gator...the notorious KaZaA spyware suite....WTF!!
it is a memory pig for one, with guy runnin 256mb of mem,
there is the "Not Responding" issue, if there is Gator, i
will assume there is "SaveNow" also, Gator's evil twin.
Sell the company all brand new PC's, 3.0ghz P4's 120GB
drives, 768-1024MB DDR for $5000.00 if they are insistant
on running Gator, they might buy em, then again, they may
also sell you the company for a song and dance as well :-)

I would bet if you REMOVED GATOR, deleted all of it's
Registry keys,{there can be a few} and did some tweaking,
you could reboot and the thing would load much faster.
Or give them Bonzai Buddy, take their 600.00 dollars and
tell them to have fun, they will be calling you again when
Bonzai makes their computers BSoD ;-) (payday for you)
Then, when they aren't expecting it, hit them with the
stick!

Arnie,
Convince the client to switch over to RoboForm [freeware]
http://www.roboform.com/
It will even import the needed Gator settings\info

Then clean out the system ......
