Saving the custom webpage icons helps to find those URL's when I open a
favorites folder. Lately, all of my customized webpage icons have
disappeared and are replaced with the default internet explorer "E". Even
when I right click a favorite link to get properties and try to save the link
with its customized icon, it has disappeared by the time I reboot. Also, I
do not seem to have a favicon.ico file in IE. What do I need to do to get
those custom page icons back?

Hi Still In Nawlins :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally will only
last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

The Favicons are stored in the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and disappear
when they expire out of TIF or TIF is cleared. Get FavOrg:

FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons (Line 108)

and..

Icons are temporarily stored in a file called iconcache.dll, You might try
deleting this file and restart your computer, Windows should automatically
rebuild the iconcache.dll on reboot. Be sure to make a backup copy just in
case.

Here are a couple of ways to save these Favicons:

Preserve the Favicons using AM-Deadlink (Free)

To preserve the Favicons manually,

Visit that site and create a shortcut of it to the Desktop
Right-click the URL shortcut, and Send To > Notepad
Look at the line reading IconFile:

Example:
IconFile=http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico
Now, type http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico in the browser window and save
the .ico file locally.
Change the URL icon using the "Change Icon" in it's Properties sheet.

Note: View > Source can also be used to view the Favicon URL.

or....

With favicons, go to the URLthe Favicon came from and add /favicon.ico to
the URL.

You can then drag the Favicon but if you can't then pull the small
"e" from the upper left corner name bar several times like a suspender strap
and then drag it to the desktop.

1) Change the name of the Favicon.
2) Put it in a folder you can call anything including "Happy Trail Icons."
3) If you want to exchange any shortcut icon for a Favicon, then rt. click
desktop>porperties>change icons and browse any folders to change to that
particular icon. This includes System 32, Program Files, Download Files and
Zip files. You can also exchange the shortcut icon with the icons you
accumulate in the save icons folder referenced above as the "Happy Trail
Icon" folder.

Hope this helps.
