Custom type in user-scope application configuration

I would like to user StringDictionary in my user scope configuration
variable. I tried to add a variable with StringDictionary type using Setting
Editor but it doesn't seem to persist.

What do I need to do to resolve it?

StringDictionary is not serializable as XML straight out of the box. You can
derive a class from it that implements IXmlSerializable, and use that. Here
