"Custom Shows" is greyed out.

Using PP 2000, SP-3. Slide Show / Custom Shows and Slide
Show / Set up show / Custom show is never available (i.e.
it is greyed out). Office 2000 was removed and re-
installed, but this did not overcome the problem. A search
using google and a search of Microsoft's knowledge base
did not provide any solutions.

Any suggestions. Thanks.

Al,

It is also greyed out here. That is because you need to first assign some
slides to an actual custom show. Instead of going Slide Show| Set up show|
Custom Slide show, go to:

Slideshow| Custom shows, which is located at the bottom of the menu. Click
on the "New" button, add some slides from the current presentation, and you
should be away!

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, my partner (Al Chapman) gave you the wrong information when descibing the problem. Custom shows have already been created and I can access them fine through Slide Show / Setup Slide Show .... Where access is greyed out is under Slide Show/Custom Shows.

These shows were originally customized on this same computer. (Even if I create a new show from scratch, I cannot access Slide Show / Custom Shows through it.) I CAN run existing custom shows via F5 and right mouse click..., but I cannot edit them.

Thank you for any help on this mystery.

Fiona,

I thought it was too simple <g.. I really don't know, unless it is some
strange sort of Windows access thingy. What version of Windows do you have?
Does it make any difference who logs on? <postulates Glen without really
knowing>.

Windows 98 SP2 and Fiona is the only user.
Glen - further to Fiona's message - if you start a new
PP2000 presentation and create a few slides then BOTH:
- SLIDE SHOW / SET UP SHOW / CUSTOM SHOW, and
- SLIDE SHOW / CUSTOM SHOWS
are greyed out / unnavailable.

If custom shows exist (i.e. created some time ago on this
computer when the menu item existed, or the whole show was
moved from another computer), then you can run a custom
show via F5 and right mouse click.

Hi,

Thanks for the extra info, but I have no idea. I wonder if new service packs
have been applied? I'll do some snooping.

Al,
I have been following this conversation with great interest. Unfortunately,
no matter what I do here I can't recreate Fiona's problem.

A few thoughts:
1) Is it possible that Fiona's copy of PPT has been corrupted? What happens
if run Detect and Repair from the Help menu, does the option come back? I
know you said you did a re-install, but sometimes D&R finds things
re-install doesn't.
2) Once you have a presentation with a custom show on her machine, can you
work with the custom show?
3) Does it matter whether the slides have titles or not? (It shouldn't, but
I am data gathering....)

Another possibility:

Do the titles on her slides have commas? That makes specific slides
unselectable in custom shows, so, if all titles had commas,
the whole custom show thing would be a mess.

This resolved another issue with slide finder dialog (insert/slides from
file) not showing up for some users. No idea if it will help here or
not, but it sure won't hurt to try. Be sure to
back up the registry before trying this!

Click Start, Run, Regedt32, OK
Allow full control to users of the following keys:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
Security - Permissions - check "Allow inheritable permissions" - Allow
full control to all users.

Kathryn -

1) Thanks for the suggestions. I've now run detect and
repair on Fiona's computer, but SLIDE SHOW / CUSTOM SHOWS
is still greyed out.
2)If we open a presentation that includes custom shows, we
can get to them via SLIDE SHOW / SET UP SHOW / CUSTOM SHOW
or through the right click mouse menu when running the
show.
3)The show we've been testing has titles. I'll try prepare
a new show on a different computer, add a custom show to
it, move it to Fiona's computer and see if she can edit
the custom show on it.

Thanks again for any suggestions you can offer.
