Hi,

I need to scan & OCR many 12x21 cm documents with OmniPage 14, but I
cannot find a way to set custom page sizes (Scanner setup only seems to
allow pre-set sizes A4, A5, B5, Letter, etc). If I select B5, when
OmniPage auto-rotates pages, the image is not centered (page size to
big) and the OCR gets all jumbled by black lines.

I'm using a SnapScan 1212 scanner with Scanwise 2.0 (also looked into
Scanwise's options, but no go).

There's a TWAINCAP.INI in WINNT, but it there is a place to set custom
page sizes I can't tell.

Does anybody have a idea what to do?

Run the Scanner wizard in OmniPage 14 to find the capabilities of your
scanner.
OmniPage will only use the sizes that the scanner is capable of supporting.

The scanner wizard is in the start menu item for OmniPage.

12 cm x 21 cm or 120 mm x 210 mm is not the correct width/height ratio for
international standard paper sizes.

The closest size is A5 which is 148 x 210 mm or 14.8 cm x 21 cm.

B5 is 17.6 cm x 25.0 cm which is much to large. I am not surprised that
selection does not work.

To prevent the auto rotate, place the paper in the correct orientation on
the scanner glass if possible.

Also you may have to do a manual zoning to process the document correctly.
Start reading your Omnipage 14 user's guide on page 54 to learn about manual
zoning.

Read the paragraph Scanner starting on page 31 to 32 to set the scanning
page size.

Thanks for your reply.

I have done all you mentioned above.

I am wondering if there is somewhere (maybe an .ini or .cnf file) where
one could tell OP14 and/or Scanwise(TWAIN driver) to use a custom
scanning frame instead of the standard sizes.

If I could select the exact size, this would optimize file size and
scan time.

Again, thanks for your reply and time.

You set the zones to set the OCR area and the type of zone. You can even set
ignore zones.

Start reading your Omnipage 14 user's guide.

Describing the layout of the document is on page 51.

Zones and backgrounds on page 53.

Manual zoning page 54-59.

Zoning is how you control what is the result of the OCR.

Use the scanner setup wizzard, your current scanner (twain) will be
identified, select test scanner or digital camera select next, your
twain software will be identified again. Select next and the next
screen will ask you if you want to test the device, select yes and
next.
In the next screen select advanced settings, then select show native
user-interface and select ok. Let the wizzard go through the rest of
the steps and after completion open Omnipage and use. You will use the
native twain driver instead of the Scansoft interface, you can select
the area to scan.
