Is it possible to suppress the "Type a question for help" frame, as well as
the minimize, restore and close boxes, on a custom menu bar?

To remove the 'type a question' frame, right-click the toolbar and select
'Customize...'. Right-click on the 'type a question' frame and click the
'show' option so there's no checkmark next to it.

Not sure what you mean by 'the minimize, restore and close boxes', but see
if this helps. Select the 'Toolbars' tab on the customize dialog, click to
select your toolbar, then click 'Properties'. Set/clear the various
checkboxes to get the behaviour you want.
