custom fields in mail merge

I am trying to add custom fields to outlook and then mail merge to word.
Word will ask my for the data source. I select otlook and the the actual
record. It will not however recognize any of the custom fields. HELP!
 
Make sure the fields are defined in the folder, not just in individual
items, and start the merge from the Outlook contacts folder, not from Word.
