Custom Animation dialog box

I'm a PowerPoint novice but, still, I don't think this is a dumb question.

I'm having this problem on a friend's PC. When I right click on a sound
object, and select "Edit Sound Object" or "Action Settings" or "Format
Picture", a dialog box will pop up as expected. However, if I right click
"Custom Animation" nothing pops up. It looks like CA might be docked to the
right side of the screen, but in a web-styled look (not the classic dialog
box look).

I need to make just one setting on the Mulimedia tab, but I can't locate the
4 tabs. It looks like what is docked is the Order and Timing tab. Does
anyone know how I can get the CA dialog box to look like the old-fashion,
regular, popup dialog box?

Thanks very much!
Bill

You can get the "old" look but at the expense of losing all of the "New
Animations". Click "Tools", "Options", click the "Edit" TAB and check the
"disable" option for "New animation effects". I think it will pay you to
get used to the taskpane version since you really want to use the new
animations. Just my humble opinion!

I just saw a typo-

should be:

Starting with PowerPoint 2002/XP, many things that used to be dialog
boxes are put on the right side of the screen. When you right click and
select Custom Animation, you should see the Media element in a list of
animated objects on the right side of the screen. Click on it and you
should see a triangle next to it for a pull-down menu. Click on the
triangle, and you should find what you are looking for in the menu.

Bill and David,

Thank you for the quick and informative replies. I created the show on
PowerPoint 2000, so my friend must have 2002 or XP. When I'm over there
next, I'll bite the bullet and just get used to the taskpane(in the neck ;)

Thanks again,

Since the file was created in 2000, then turning off the new animations as Bill D suggested won't be a problem -- your show should play the way you intended it. It's really only an issue on 2002/2003 presentations which have used the new animations and transitions, as reverting to the old 2000 custom animation dialogs also disables the new animations and transitions themselves. (Did that even make sense?)

But I agree with you and the others -- learning about the task pane and new animations in PPT is a good thing. You'll be drooling for an update soon after you start playing, I bet...
