CUSI-FX IDE problem with CD-RW drives

Could someone please advise on a possible course of action for the
folling problem? I'm trying to install a replacement CD-RW drive, as my
last LG drive quit working. (This was verified by installing it into
another computer.) I had purchased a Sony 52X drive, and I had nothing
but problems. Windows 98SE would become very sluggish, getting slower
as the minutes passed. Other times the computer would crash, not shut
down, or even boot up. I took the drive back, thinking it was the
drive. I've since bought another CD-RW from a different manufacturer,
and I'm having similar problems. When I first started the machine after
the hardware installation, the computer didn't boot. I restarted it
only to have it crash when I tried to access "My Computer."

I have disconnected the drive altogether, and now the computer is
working correctly. Has anyone had similar problems? Does anyone have
any suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to avoid buying a
new motherboard if I didn't have to.

Midnightwreck.

Motherboard: CUSI-FX 630E AGPset
BIOS: Award version 1009.

I'd try a BIOS update:
ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/BIOS/Socket_370/SIS_Chipset/SIS_630e/CUSI-FX/
The current version is 1018 beta 5.
