Cursor activating links

In Vista, how do I stop the cursor from activating a link over which it stops
or passes? Sometimes I am looking for a link over which to place the cursor
and anticipate having to left click on the touch pad (I am using a laptop).
More often than not the cursor passes over a link button and activates that
link which often is not where I want to go! How do I turn off this feature?

Do you have Tablet PC, the feature you are describing is a feature of the pen
used in Tablet PC.
Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings and deselect setting for hovering of the
lightpen.
If you are not using Tablet PC the service can be disabled in "Services"

If advise given from anyone, solves problem or not, or if solved from
another source, post back & let us know.

My laptop is a SONY VGN-FZ140E which is not a tablet PC like the HP
TX-1219us (which I traded back for the Sny). And, where do I find
"services"? I've looked for it and can't come up with it.

To select Services > Control Panel > Administration Tools > Services > scroll
down to > Tablet PC Input Services > right click > a box will appear with
choice to disable/manual/automatic > select "Disable" > OK then close all
windows.

Well, I was not able to find any "hovering of the light pen" in the tablet PC
window. I did find through the Classic View, Administrative Tools, Services,
Tablet Input Services and disabled that one. I'll have to see how this works
before I say "all is well." Tnx for the help so far. I'll report back later.

One other item that you should check in "Device Mananger" under "Mouse &
other Input Devices" if you have a "Tablet Pointing Device" listed and you
are not using it, you can disable that device from operating.

Very aggravating isn't it?

Actually I think it to be one of those features intended to assist those
with disabilities. Go to the "Ease of Access Centre"; click on "Make the
mouse easier to use" and uncheck the box alongside "Activate a window by
hovering over it with a mouse". Click on "apply" and OK out.

I couldn't find either of the links given by Bob on my new HP laptop using
Vista Home Premium but the above method worked straight away for me.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Andereida, but the function isn't in my version of Vista Home
Premium. There is one for switching between windows and it was unchecked,
but not one for hovering over links. And, despite following what Bob has
advised, my irritating "activation by hovering" continues. And that is just
what is happening, tho' I am not deliberately hovering. On some screens,
I've just been bewildered by the multitude of selections and hesitate and,
unfortunately, the curor may be over some lin, not one that I want, and
"bingo" that window opens up or I'm shifted to a new one. Aggghhhh! And,
I've not been successful stopping it! I'm almost ready to go backwards to XP.

Thank you for your reply.

If you don't have the Microsoft 'Ease of Access Centre' on your machine then
I'm sorry that I cannot help. Perhaps it is an OEM addition. For several
weeks after I took delivery of my laptop I was sent round the wall with
precisely the problems you describe. After a very long search I found the
solution mentioned in my earlier post.

I am surprised no MVP has come forward to reply to your query. With this
hovering feature activated in the OS much software is virtually unusable.
