Hi,

I have recently had to transfer a DNS record of a .com.
This is the first time I have had to do this and it caused me a great deal
of difficulty I think because the Registrar and the DNS provider were two
totally differenrt enties.

so my basic question is

what is the difference between the current registrar and the DNS provider??
Should these two things belong to the same entity??

sorry about the basic question.

many thanks in advance.

cheers

martin.

This is apples and oranges, the registrar may or may not host the DNS zone
for you. If you go to www.internic.net and do a whois lookup on your domain
name it will give you the public record of who the registrar is and what DNS
servers are Authoritative for the domain.

No. Some times they are, some times not. The registrar is the king. It is
the thing that "owns" the domain name and the only thing that can change the
things such as owner, tech contact, etc. Once you find out who the
registrar is, you can contact them to make a dns change. If your not the
admin contact, then you need to change this which is normally a pain. You
need to make a request and current owner (if that was your isp) needs to
agree to the change, etc.
