Hi,

Which is the current favorite, freeware, firewall?

TIA

I prefer Sygate Personal firewall,

But the following firewalls also seem to be quite good:
Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0 ( http://www.jetico.com/jpfirewall.htm )
Kerio Personal Firewall 4.1.2 ( http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html )
Or more prefered by some: the 2.15 version (
http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-en-win.exe )
Securepoint PCFirewall 3.6 (
http://www.securepoint.de/de/products-pcfirewall.html )
SoftPerfect Personal firewall 1.4 (
http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/ )
Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5 ( http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php )
ZoneAlarm 5.5.062.004 (

Me too.

Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0 ( http://www.jetico.com/jpfirewall.htm )

Beta version, many problems.

Buggy garbage. Don't waste your time. It slowed my browsing by half. Many
bad stories on their forum, as well as in comp.security.firewalls
) Or more prefered by some: the 2.15 version (

Has an identified vulnerability with malformed packets.

You'll only find version 5.6 there, which some people have had major
problems with. You can get a late build of 5.5 here:

http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?download=1&ID=1662

I guess it's OK if you don't care about port control, and don't want to
know what's going on in the background.

the one between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment ...
opps wrong group ... ZoneAlarm Free

Linux 2.4.x netfilter (configured via iptables). Very configurable, and
most importantly runs on a separate PC. Your firewall really should be
running on a separate system, not loaded as an application.

Beta version, many problems.

It's no longer beta. 1.0 was released recently. Some have reported
problems, but I've never had any on a Win2k setup here.. Proceed with
caution however...

Hi,

It is interesting that no one is using OutPost (free).. I
have been using it for a while now, and am very pleased with
it. Features include standard firewall functions, as well as
dns cache, ad blocking, content filtering, active content
filtering, and e-mail filtering.

While these functions may be provided by other applications I
find it easier to have all in a single application.. A word
of caution.. DO NOT try to update, since this will actually
download the latest 30 day trial version.

I do !
I also tried KPF, ZA and Sygate, but Outpost is the one I prefer.
Quite easy to parameter with pre-configured rules, not to huge, it
allows to make optimized rules...
A really good one... I hope there will be an updated free version soon
(this one is quite old)

I don't see what more they can put in. As I understand it, the
"open architecture" allows for plugin addition.. If you go ogle
for outpost+firewall+plugin you will find a lot of resources.

I do too. I have used Outpost1 for around 3 years, have tried a few
others mentioned here, but always go back to Outpost.
Features I like is that it is application based, you can specify whatever
ports and whatever sites any application can access. And being able to
allow the likes of Outlook Express to download ONLY the HTML content that
you specify

There are also other plug-ins that you haven't mentioned. My favourite is
the BLOCKPOST plug in which allows the blocking of complete ranges of IP
addresses and subnet addresses.

Works fine for me on my Windows XP box. Has not impacted my browsing at
all. It's very powerful and easy to use, much better than M$ Firewall or
ZoneAlarm. My only complaint is that the log files are not limited in size
at all. Mine grew to 500MB, before I noticed and deleted it.

Sygate and the old Kerio are OK, but I found the new Kerio more user-
friendly.

Interesting , it is called 1.0 freeware (in bold), yet it's under "Fully
functional version for evaluation purposes".

The page says "Fully functional versions for evaluation purposes will
function for 30 days from the date of installation. A Help-file is
included. At the end of the trial period all containers become accessible
in read-only mode, so you will only be able to read your data. After
purchase registration is simple - we will email you a serial number
which you enter in the registration area in the Help Menu and previously
created containers will once again be fully accessible. Your data is
always safe and accessib"

Does this apply only to Bestcrypt? Or will this 1.0 jetico "freeware" be
useless after 30 days?

I think that to really get the best of OutPost one will need
to understand some basic and not so basic concepts of
internet security. One will also need to read the manual..
This makes it a bit over for the newbie, but I think it is
worth the effort.

Since 1996 ??? that's amazing !!! maybe you should tell
Microsoft about it.. That would really make their day..

Hi,

Which is the current favorite, freeware, firewall?

I use Sygate Personal. It seems to be the most secure of all the Freeware
offerings.

Kerio 2.1.5 is nearly as effective as Sygate, is lighter, and a little
easier to use.

There's a new one I really like called "SoftPerfect Firewall". Very small,
light, and neat. It's a good bit of work to set up rules, but maybe later
releases will remedy that. It's worth a try. It installs and uninstalls very
cleanly. http://www.softperfect.com/

No, I believe this applies to their other products. Jetico Personal
Firewall 1.0 is freeware at the moment and continues to function after
30 days without any problems. You can write to them with any questions
at (e-mail address removed). They're very good about responding to questions
and problems. Excellent support, amazing in fact..
