My latest defintions are December 16th-- 5785--and all attempts at
downloading new defintions indicate these are the current definitions. Is
this true? Just hard to believe no new definitions have been released in over
2 weeks!!! Would somebody please advise. Thanks & God Bless!

Rick

5785 is still current. Let's hope that the spyware writers are taking a
break along with the Microsoft employees.

Thanks, Bill! I appreciate the quick response! Yeah, I guess even
Microsofties deserve some time off...though we all know: the bad guys don't
take any time off!!!

I do see a lot of anxiety over definitions in these groups. Microsoft
pioneered the practice of releasing security patches on a scheduled
basis--at the request of their customers.

I believe this measured response to a very real threat has served their
customers well--it allows for predictable staffing efforts around patch
dates, and avoids the angst involved in checking continuously for new
patches and reacting quickly when one appears.

I believe they are trying to do something somewhat similar with antispyware
definitions--essentially a scheduled release, with occasional exceptions
when conditions warrant.

I like this, and I suspect I will like the update mechanism in beta2. I
prefer antispyware and antivirus update mechanisms which are as invisible as
possible, but with some cue to assure me that, in fact, the app is up to
date. Windows OneCare Live does this quite nicely--I hope Windows Defender
will do it as well.

Very true and well said, Bill. Thanks again. Hey, pleading ignorance: what is
"Windows OneCare" and "Windows Defender"???

Dear Rick,

Windows OneCare is microsoft's antivirus software,

Defender is official name of MS antispyware you are using

Close--Windows OneCare Live is a subscription suite, one component of which
is Microsoft Antivirus. (this may not be an official name) This is also a
component of Microsoft Client Protection, a different subscription suite
aimed a managed corporate desktops. OneCare also includes backup and, last
I heard, antispyware. MCP will include antispyware as well.

You can try out Microsoft's antivirus solution with the latest defs at:

www.safety.live

Click on Protection in the left column, and do a Protection Scan.

For best results on an infected system, do this in safe mode with
networking. This is safe to do behind either a router or hardware firewall,
or when using the Windows firewall. I'm not sure what third-party software
firewalls are active in safe mode.

Thanks very much Bill, works fine now. I wrote to you in one of the other
threads which was pretty old and maybe you didn't see it, but I wanted to say
"Thank You" to you for ALL the great help you offer this list! I for one
really appreciate it as I'm sure the others do too.

Kind Regards,

Thanks very much! There are, indeed, thousands of messages in these groups
that I don't see, for a variety of reasons. It's a good thing that this is
a team effort--thanks to all of you out there who play a part in that
teamwork.
