Just wondering if they are all like Canon. Looks like a hopless case based
on previous posts.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition has only been out for a month....and it
is not installed on very many 64 bit systems yet. the installed base of
users with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is extremely tiny compared to
Windows XP.

Your only recourse is to do as the rest of us running the new OS; email the
manufacturers and express your dissatisfaction with their lack of support.

Also be aware that the manufacturer may never provide 64 bit drivers for
your scanner, depending upon it's age. They are under no obligation to do
so, and may indeed prefer you to buy a new compatible scanner rather than
support an older one. Whether or not this is to your liking, it is a simple
business decision on the part of the OEM.

In the interim, you might also do as most of us do, and dual boot with a 32
bit version of Windows. That was you can boot into the 32 bit OS for
"serious" work and then boot into the 64 bit OS when you want to "play".

I have a Canon Scanner and I sent them an email asking when they will
release drivers for this scanner for winxp64 and I got a answer back stating
they do not believe they will release drivers for this scanner. Well time to
shop for a new scanner as I am not staying in 32 bit land just for them.

maybe it will be better not buying another scanner from Canon next time! I
have a Canon printer..i hope it will work on xp64.......and a scanner from
Epson......

Maybe would should compile a list of Good and Bad manufacturers, who are
and are not back porting drivers. That way people can make an informed
choice of which manufacturers actually care about their customers in
addition to their revenues. Pbviously, when manufacturers start
releasing drivers for older hardware, they may be taken of the bad list,
and added (if it merits it) to the good list..

Bad:
Samsung
Cannon
Epson
Microsoft (Hardware)

Good:
Nvidia (only because of unified drivers)
Ati (only because of unified drivers)
Logitech

There is such a list for printers and how well the various manufacturers
support linux (if they don't support linux, then don't bet on them
supporting old or even brand new operating systems). Check out
http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

The vendor report cards at http://www.linuxprinting.org/vendors.html
also make interesting reading to see which manufacturers are helpful and
which just want to forget you after they have your money...

You might try third party software like silverfast. They'll probably
have 64bit software in the future. They like selling per machine.

There's another one out there, the name escapes me.
