This is my first release of Vista,
So I was wondering, when they come out with other releases, will have to go
through the signup process again?
And if not, will those of us who opt to pay for the DVD's need to pay again
for the next release (I'm assuming so) or will we just automatically get
sent the next one?

thanks

If you are in the Customer Preview Program (CPP) and paid to have Vista Beta
2 (Build 5384) sent to you on DVD's, you already have paid the shipping for
the RC1 DVD's as well.

RC1 is the next build for the CPP. You will be notified when it becomes
available. If you downloaded the file(s) instead of ordering the DVD's, you
will also be notified when RC1 becomes available.

I believe all this information was on the CPP registration web page that
required an acknowledgement before proceeding to the download site.

If you are not in the CPP program, then you are enrolled in the TechNet or
the MSDN programs (or both) and will be notified through that program of any
and all future builds available to you.

I hope this answers your curiosity.

I ordered the DVD install which didn't arrive although I contacted the
despatch and they are going to send by courier (even though I have told them
I had to download in the end as I had purchased a computer to run Vista) I
have activated etc and have been running beta(2) when RC1 is released *if* my
DVD copy of this arrives quickly would I be able to use this to install or am
I best to download from the link sent for my current installed version?

I am not too sure if RC1 will be linked to the key I have already.
They are despatching the first discs today - well a second copy as the first
DVD didn't arrive.

Guess it pays to read thoroughly....I just got caught up in the excitement
of being able to beta something again.

You know, MS could make a side income on people like me...Place a message in
the agreement that says "When you get your notification email that RC1 is
available, you'll also see a link to pay for shipping the dvd's. Don't use
this....Go here instead....The pay link is only for those who didn't read
this agreement"

Hey pippin;

Just so I understand the question:

You registered for the CPP and were award one or two Product Key(s). You
then also ordered the DVD set, which, presumably, will come with their own
set of Product Keys. You then downloaded the file, installed Vista and
activated Vista with (one of) the Product Key(s) you received when you
registered for the CPP.

Your concern is that the Product Keys issued with the DVD set (that you do
not have, but has been promised to you) will supersede the Product Key(s)
you received with your registration, and the consequence will be that
Microsoft will not accept your previous activation and thus not allow you to
participate in the RC1 launch. Did I get it right?

I do not know the answer. My guess is that as long as you have activated
Vista Beta with at least one of the Product Keys that are registered to
your Passport Account you are going to be just fine.

If the DVD set ever does arrive, go into the System information and change
the Product Key and activate every key that is registered to you. I
registered for two keys and have activated both of them on the same machine,
within ten minutes of each other, so I don't think the key is specific to
each copy of Vista, but rather a bit generic to any copy of Vista (5384).

I hope this rambling helps a little with your conundrum.

Thank you for your reply.

I ordered and waited but when Microsoft warned there would be a cut off day
I got really worried as there was no sign of my DVD :( my computer had been
ordered plus a monitor - both arrived which was a huge worry as I wanted so
much to really beta test. I was able to download before the shut off time and
have Vista installed for a few weeks now still trying to chase the DVD (just
because I had paid for it) I also e-mailed to advise I had done this and only
today did I get a response that they would send a DVD - advised again that I
do have the install (still waiting to hear)

I think I will be very safe when RC1 is released and download from the
option for my current install. I only have the one .Net which is working with
this.
Wonder if the install on 10 computers means of we re-install 10 times. The
link for pay for the DVD was the first link................UK had to pay more
as I noticed the US was only $10. If my DVD ever arrives it will stay sealed
as I don't want to be doing anything wrong.
I have one install and it activated first time (thankfully)
