On the other hand - let's not forget it's FREEWARE ... and these
daily updates might cost quite a lot of bandwidth ... :-((
I'd rather wait a couple of minutes for an update as long there will
be a next one

Buddy of mine was having difficulties, and I sent this tweak to him.
Then we had a bit of a back-and-forth about how this might all wash out.
Below is my take on it:
Do you suppose Grisoft is using a slow server to nudge us
freeloaders into anteing up for the PRO version?
Me, I think it's growing pains. Freeware is getting a lot of good
"mainstream" press, online and otherwise. Most often touted are Ad-Aware
and Spybot, but other apps (like AVG) are getting more widespread
attention. You don't have to be a geek anymore to understand that yes,
there really are good, free, safe apps out there that people are just
flat giving away. It takes people a while to get their heads wrapped
around that ("You get what you pay for"), but it's happening.
Same thing happened with version 6, 'til word got out that the url.ini
file could be edited and alternative servers accessed. Supposedly,
Grisoft gave that a wink and a nod -- they didn't want to get a bad rep,
even with the freeloaders.
Dunno what Grisoft's response will be. This particular hack just showed
up on grc.com; it'll no doubt balloon from there. I suspect they just
plain underestimated the kind of load the free server was gonna be
under. In a normal business model, that would be a good problem to have.
Dunno how it would work with the two-tiered free/pay model. I spose the
beancounters and the techies and the sales suits will have to do some
kind of cost/benefit analysis and go from there. In the long term, I
suspect server costs and bandwidth costs are a small piece of the
puzzle. My bet is on the Grisoft geeks and suits beating off the
beancounters and keeping us freeloaders in the fold.
