[CUR-DLS]: 1240x1024 24 bit true colour possible?

Hello.
I have a little question:
Asus CUR-DLS has 4MB ATI Rage XL onboard PCI graphics accelerator.
By calculation I need less than 4 MB for 24 bit true colour at
1280x1024 pixel using X11R6 on a BSD UNIX platform. But it won't work
at this colour depth and resolution.
How can I proof the amount of __working__ memory on that mobo (menas:
if VGA memory is broken, how to test this ...)

Maybe the selected mode in fact uses 32 and not 24 bits?
