I recently bought a 512 MB SDRam stick for my old PIII, but it is only
recognized as 256 MB.

I have tried it by itself, tried it in all slots and I have the latest
bios installed.

I used to run a 128 MB and a 64 MB with no problems.

I now have both the 512 MB and the 128 MB in there but only 384MB is
recognized.

Is there any way to get this MB to recognized a 512 MB stick properly?
I wouldn't worry too much but the memory was not that cheap.

The new memory is PC133, the old memory is, well, it's quite old -
back to the early days of SDRam.

I doubt the store will take the memory back, any help is appreciated.

Max size DIMM on a 440BX is 256MB. Max config is 4x256MB @ 100MHz
or 3x256MB @ 133MHz (and depends on whether the board has four
slots or not, in the first case). I bought my 256MB sticks from
Crucial. There is more info here, concerning what happens when
high density RAM is used - not all 256MB DIMMs are the same...

I think I bought the CT32M64S4D7E CAS2 SDRAM here:
