Ctrl+Alt+Delete - Processes

Kevin

Lately I've been getting tons of pop up ads and prompts
for downloads. I check my ctrl alt delete processes and i
find a few I know are bogus, like E_SOHIC 1.exe, and a
few junk, but then there are others like msmsgs.exe,
which i think is trying to hide behind msnmsgr.exe, but I
don't know which is a virus. Two programs start up
everytime I start my computer, AdDestroyer and Virtual
Bouncer, two programs I do not want to start up. How do i
get this to stop?

One more thing that is ALWAYS good practice.

Considering that you said that:

"Lately I've been getting tons of pop up ads and prompts
for downloads. I check my ctrl alt delete processes and i
find a few I know are bogus, like E_SOHIC 1.exe"

Get anti-spyware/adware programs (yes programs). There
are many to choose from but here are two to start you off.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware
www.lavasoftusa.com

Spybot Search&Destroy
www.safer-networking.org

Download both programs, check for all updates, install
all updates and scan your computer. I'm guessing that
you'll have quite a few hits in both. (If you get the
personal or free version of Ad-Aware, you have to
manually check every entry that comes up. In Ad-Aware
Pro, there's a setting that will automatically select all
the entries that were found)

It's good practice to run these as often as you would an
anti-virus scan (you are doing that...right?).

Hope this helps,

Nick

Hey Kevin,

Read this one which will help u remove unwanted startup programs.
thrup/restoreperf.asp
Remember if u r not sure abt any programs running on
startup better keep those intact (or take a backup before
tricking).. good luck..

one simple thing you can do is open registry editor by
typing 'regedit' at the run prompt. use the search menu
to search for the 'runonce' entry. when you find the
runonce entry, select the entry right above it, which
should be called 'run'. (there may be several locations
with 'run' and 'runonce' entries. in the 'run' entry, on
the right side of the window, it should contain most of
the programs that are set to run when windows starts up.
you can remove any of them you feel are bogus. also check
your win.ini file and make sure there isn't a line that
says: run=file.exe (or some filename). it may say load=
too.

also, task manager sometimes doesn't always display every
last task. try taskinfo --
http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.html

install a program called spybot search&destroy also. it's
really helpful. http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-8022-
10194058.html?tag=lst-0-2 this will remove lots of
unwanted programs, spyware, and adware

you may also have a virus. get a reputable virus checker,
like norton antivirus, download all the updates, scan
your whole harddrive, keep it running live constantly.
check for updates weekly or monthly. this will prevent a
world of problems and keep your computer in good shape.

and last, check your virtual memory. try adjusting the
swap file size to something like 512mb or 1024mb. it may
or may not make a difference in performance.
