The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?
The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
Almost certainly a virus. There are several that attempt to frustrate any
attempt to remove them.
If you go to START / RUN & type in MSCONFIG or/& REGEDIT, will they open for
you?
Will your anti-virus program open?
If not start hunting for a virus I suggest.
Try performing a spyware scan by downloading and running SuperAntispyware
from here. It has worked for 99% of our clients spyware problems. And it is
free for home use. http://www.superantispyware.com
What about other mechanisms to start it? You can right-click in the taskbar
to get the context menu that includes Task Manager. You can try
Ctrl-Shift-Esc. You can try Start | Run | taskmgr.
Good suggestion Sam.
& if that doesn't work then rename tskmgr.exe to tskmgr.com & then click on
it.
If that does open it then you can be confident that it is a virus.
