Cryptographic Service Error

Greetings,

The Crytographic service is not running on my laptop. I've done all
the tricks Microsoft's support staff could offer in 20 e-mail
exchanges. I've ripped catroot out by the tail, run SFC /Purgcache
followed by SFC /ScanNow, re-registered dlls till I'm blue in the face
and the problem remains.

Not because the Crytographic service can't be started, but because it
doesn't even show up on the list of services !

I believe the line in the registry which invokes loading of the
service is damaged or missing.

Can anyone point out where I should look and what should be there?

You've said nothing about the details of the error or what you've tried, but

Thanks, but that's one of the many sites I have examined. They don't
tell you what to do if the Cryptograhic Service isn't found on the
list of available services.

The problem first appeared almost a year ago when I couldn't upgrade
the machine from SP1 to SP2. I gave up on that.

Now I can't install new software which requires an upgrade to the Win
installer service because the installer can't be upgraded either.

I suspect my inability to find crytpsvc.dll anywhere in the registry
is the real issue here.

Do you know where I can find info on what hive it lives in and how it
should be invoked?
