I bought a Viewscan G70f flatscreen 17 inch crt monitor
recently. Aside from other problems, I cannot get a
black point adjustment with the brightness control.
Can anyone recommend a good 17 inch crt monitor that
can give a black point?

I need black point to properly edit and display my
scanned B&W film negatives.

Thanks for your reply,

George

I would say, this is a good case for "try before buy".

Go into a computer store or office supply store and check the display
monitors brightness control range and see if you can get black.

Remember, the contrast control will effect brightness and the black point
also.

Hi there.

I don't quite understand the above comment. Everything I have read about
Calibration seems to state that Contrast sets the White Point and Brightness
sets the Black Point.

Have I picked this up wrongly, or have I missed something out?

You have not missed anything, it is true that Brightness sets the Black
point and Contrast sets the White point.

If monitors were perfect devices, that would be true, but the fact is the
two controls do interact. If the contrast is turned up all the way, the
brightness sometimes can not extinguish the electron beam. Thereby screwing
up the black point.

If the monitor is brand new, return it. If it is not, the problem can be
due to aging. If you can't adjust black/white points, you can't
calibrate a monitor.

Thanks for the information, I now know just a little bit more than I did.
